| Common DisordersPhobias and fears
‘Studies indicate that up to 12% of people have phobias at some stage in their lives’ (National Phobic Society) Fear is an emotion that we feel when we encounter a real danger and our ‘flight or flight’ response becomes activated. A phobia creates similar, if not more intense, feelings but differs from a fear in that there is no rational threat or danger. Phobias are usually associated with an early childhood trauma that resurface in our adult lives when our anxiety levels are high. Phobias and fears can have a devastating affect on daily life but many people do not seek help because they are embarrassed, aware that their response is illogical. Hypnotherapy can offer a fast, but life long, alleviation of phobic or fear responses by desensitising the fear template in the subconscious mind and reducing overall anxiety. Anxiety and stress Anxiety and stress are interchangeable and can take many psychological and physical forms including panic attacks, irritable bowel syndrome, skin disorders, nail biting, obsessional compulsive disorder, headaches, infertility and sexual problems. High levels of anxiety and stress will also affect our ability to cope with pain. Anxiety is not something that we are born with but it is something we can learn to control. By understanding how your mind works and by changing negative thought patterns using hypnotherapy, anxiety can be reduced considerably. Depression Between 8-12% of the population experience depression in any year (Office for National Statistics Psychiatric Morbidity)
Depression is an extremely common psychological disorder that is becoming increasingly prevalent in the Western world.
Depression can encompass a wide range of symptoms and suffers can have all or some of these symptoms, these include;
loss of pleasure or interest, low energy or mood, difficulty focusing, low self esteem or sleeping disturbances and distinctive weight loss or gain.
Hypnotherapy can help treat depression with great effect. Some symptoms are treated exclusively, such as insomnia, eating disorders and lack of motivation, or the depression may be tackled as a whole. Hypnotherapy can help a sufferer to challenge their thought patterns, focus on problem solving and understand the mechanics of the brain.
Confidence Confidence is often low in people who are suffering from anxiety, depression or stress and low confidence may leave you feeling worthless and inadequate. By changing the way you react to situations and reducing anxiety levels hypnotherapy can help you to become confident and positive. Whether it is everyday confidence levels or for an event like public speaking, hypnotherapy can help you to re-educate your response patterns. Smoking ‘Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking’ (‘Cognitive reactions to smoking relapse’, New Scientist, Vol 135)
Often clients who want help stopping a smoking habit have tried everything from patches to cold turkey, but still struggle to quit. Hypnosis can help enormously in the fight against
cigarettes by removing the desire to smoke from your mind. This creates a feeling of getting rid of something you don’t want instead of giving up something that you enjoy.
Weight Loss Clients who want help to lose weight have usually tried every diet under the sun, all to no avail and possibly some harm. A fundamental change in eating behaviour is necessary to ensure permanent weight control is established. Hypnotherapy can help by harnessing inner motivation and altering behavioural patterns.
Fertility
Maddy is a registered fertile body method practitioner. See www.fertilebodytherapist.com for further information.
Unfortunately in our culture the belief system surrounding childbirth is often based on the expectation of a long, scary, medicalised and agonizing experience rather than a natural, controlled, positive one. Maddy is a registered HypnoBirthing Practitioner and teaches her clients and their birthing partners the HypnoBirthing philosophy and the techniques required for achieving a natural, calm, relaxed birthing experience. HypnoBirthing teaches the Mother to trust her natural birthing instincts rather than allowing fear and past conditioning to work against them. When a woman is properly prepared for childbirth, nature is free to function in the same will-designed manner that it does with all other creatures.
5 x 2.5 hour sessions usually from about 32 weeks. Group Classes are run on a regular basis and private classes available on request.Group pregnancy relaxation classes also available. Contact Maddy for further details.

"The use of hypnosis as an aid in preparation for labour and delivery reduces complications, surgery, and hospital stays and shows direct medical benefit to Mother and Child"
There is a long history of hypnosis in the field of sport and you will not need to look very hard to find many professional sportsmen and women that use hypnosis to improve their performance (for example, Glenn Catley, the Bristol born former world boxing champion). Of course, you do not have to be at professional level to gain benefit. Hypnotherapy can improve focus, self-belief and motivation, which all have an effect on success. I use a range of techniques such as visualisations and mental rehearsal to help you think successfully and achieve your sporting goals.
